Back From Tyler...

With a new phone. Bless technology's rapid climb forward, and my willingness to put up with last week's model...

Let's talk Dallas venues. As I reported in the Star-Telegram last week, the Gypsy Tea Room will be closing her doors March 31. Don't look for my sad eulogy. I hated the place.

But where now? Do shows head to Fort Worth, or to existing Dallas venues like the Grenada Theater? There aren't many small clubs left over there these days, What's left? What's on the horizon?

I'll be posting my thoughts shortly...

Seems like more and more bands are playing in Denton. I hope they come to Fort Worth though. I don't like moving too far from the nest.

Deep Ellum sucks... I like the idea of Deep Ellum -- I love the fact that there's a central music/arts area -- but the negatives outweigh the positives. Parking sucks, too much crime, too many people cruising, too many clubs that treat their customers like cattle.

That said, I'm looking forward to seeing what the new owners do with Trees. I really didn't mind Gypsy Tea Room so much. I never got hassled there and it was pretty easy to park near.

I haven't been to a Denton show in a while, but I used to enjoy going to Rubber Gloves. Not a deluxe environment by any means, but the people were nice, and I never felt like I was being judged on how I looked/dressed.

I like going to see shows at the Ridglea, but they've tried my patience on several occasions with their door times. The ticket will say "doors at 8" and at 8:45, you're still standing in a long line around the side. By 9:00, the line starts moving, and you also start hearing music from the inside. I'm very anal about these things, and I purposely get there early so I don't miss any music, whether it's from an opening act or the main act, so that pisses me off something fierce...

Nokia = too sterile. The best shows I've seen have been in places where you want to disinfect your clothes afterwards. Same goes for Bass Hall, obviously, though Sigur Ros worked well there last February.

I still miss Bronco Bowl, though I know some people that despised it. I saw several great shows there and never got hassled. The quirkiness of the locale fit nicely with the audience.

Geez, this comment should have been a post... Frankly, I'm not going to as many live shows as I used to. I still love them, but I despise the hassle. And it takes a band I really want to see to drag me out to Deep Ellum...
